Dr. Kenneth Bowles is a cornerstone of the Minot arts community, bringing over four decades of distinguished experience as a conductor, educator, and vocal artist. A Professor Emeritus at Minot State University, Dr. Bowles served as the Director of Choral Activities and Chair of the Division of Music for over 20 years before his retirement in 2016.
His tenure in North Dakota is marked by a deep commitment to choral excellence and community collaboration. Dr. Bowles was instrumental in uniting the university and community music scenes, frequently leading joint performances featuring the MSU Concert Choir, the Minot Chamber Chorale, and the Heritage Singers. His expertise in large-scale choral-orchestral repertoire has been showcased in masterworks such as Mendelssohn's Elijah, Bach's St. John Passion, and the annual community performance of Handel's Messiah.
Beyond the podium, Dr. Bowles served as the Executive Director of the Western Plains Opera Company for 21 years, where he fostered a vibrant culture of operatic performance in the region. His leadership extended to professional advocacy as a past President of the North Dakota American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and a founding board member of the North Dakota chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
Dr. Bowles holds degrees from Texas Christian University and the University of Oklahoma, with advanced studies under legendary figures such as Nadia Boulanger and Julius Herford. In recognition of his and Dr. DeVera Bowles's, his wife, lifelong dedication to the arts, the City of Minot officially declared September 9, 2023, as "Drs. Ken and DeVera Bowles Day."
The Minot Chamber Chorale is honored to welcome Dr. Bowles back to the podium as Conductor for this season's Great Works concert.
